We are also training community members in soap making so they can earn money through microenterprise. Participants work in small groups, where they share income and reinvest what they earn to order more supplies. This model helps the business grow from within and strengthens teamwork and accountability.
After we provide the initial start-up supplies, each soap-making group becomes completely self-sufficient. They are able to continue producing, selling, and restocking on their own, creating a steady pathway toward independent income and long-term stability.
We are also in the process of starting a Zuri Life salon that will provide stable jobs for women on Mfangano Island. This is about more than beauty services. It is about income, independence, and dignity, and creating work opportunities for women who deserve a fair chance to support themselves and their families.
Even more, this salon is designed to directly strengthen our mission. Twenty percent of the salon’s profits will go toward purchasing materials to make reusable menstrual pads, helping us keep girls in school and ensuring more women and students have access to safe, reliable period products.
Zuri Life has a sewing center where we are employing two tailors and training 12 women in sewing skills and reusable pad making. This program is designed to be practical and income-driven. Women are not only learning. They are building a skill they can use to support themselves.
Upon graduation, each trainee will be able to earn an income by making garments through our shop, creating a pathway to long-term work and financial stability. They will also continue making reusable menstrual pads with us, helping ensure more girls and women in the community can access the products they need to stay healthy and stay in school.
